Thinking Digitally: A Digital Photography Primer

Thinking Digitally
is an exploration of issues and ideas primarily for photographers and photo students making the transition (or addition) from film to digital capture.  Though it has information for individuals just starting out in photography and leaping right into the digital world if fills the gap between a "Digital Photography for Dummies" type of book and a hard-core Photoshop techniques book.  It is designed as an adjunct to material presented in class or in a more technical textbook (some of which are recommended in the appendix).

It is also, in many way, a set of major "talking points" to help guide class discussion and to get the students to seriously think about the issues this evolving new medium present to photographers and to the art world.

Written in narrative, conversational style, unlike a dry textbook, it is designed to read is if I were speaking to a class.  The hard copy version of the first edition of the 270 page book is 8.5 x 11 inches and comb bound so it can be laid flat or even folded back for easy reading. There is also a CD version available with PDF files for Adobe Acrobat Reader or in LIT format for Microsoft's Reader.

Thinking Digitally started life as a student handout to help them more easily make the move into the digital world.  That plan quickly got completely out of control and demanded to become a book despite my denying it all the way up past the 50 page mark.  Then I gave up and just wrote it as it wanted to be.

The book is now being updated and made ready for a second edition.  This will add information about calibrating digital cameras, calibrating and/or profiling systems, and some of the latest data on digital Photography as of the printing. The estimated publication date is December 2004.  However, a special pre-publication comb-bound version is available now at a very special price.  If you would like to place a pre-publication order click below.
